The following is my answer to a Quora question: “How
possible is it to return to a society where most people are farmers?”
It would take a lot of compelling factors for that to
happen. None of these factors are good.
We are either looking at some sort of revolution by extreme militant
libertarians or communists; or we are looking at the collapse of the economy of
such catastrophic scale that supply chain networks have failed. Otherwise, why would society need so many
farmers?
As it is, it is estimated that the world produces
enough food to feed between 12 to 15 billion people. Most of that food is discarded for various
reasons. People starve because of
deficiencies in the distribution of food, not because there is a shortage of
food in the world. We do not need more
farmers. We need better people managing
our economies.
