The Mirror Effect: August 2022

AIA Toastmasters held its speech evaluation and table topics contest on the 11^th August 2022. We had a healthy crowd of around 50 people. Attendance within the club was lower than usual because this is convention season, and many of the club members are overseas. However, we had a healthy contingent from Tampines Changkat Toastmasters – our de facto sister club, and support from many of our friends within District 80.

The test speaker spoke about our invisible bag, filled with the cares of the world, and how we need to put that bag down. She told of her classmate, and how she did not realise her poverty and ill-health until she had to attend the funeral. There was a lot of pain in her story, a shared experience of loss, and an epiphany that lead to this speech. We were told this was her first speech outside her club, and she acquitted herself well.

Eric Tan and Linda Lee are veterans of contests, and they both showed sterling example to our newer members, who were either in their first contest, such as Rominia, or their second, such as Shirley and Kevin. They have done us proud.

Almost all the appointment holders from the club were organising a contest for the first time. Amos put together a tight, well-run programme, with clear mentorship from Pia Kim, who is also the club secretary, and Division Administration Manager. One of our sergeant-at-arms, Hong Loon, only joined the club a few days ago.
