The following is my answer to a Quora question: “Do
you think the Iraqi court sentencing the three Frenchmen to death, due to their
affiliation with the Islamic State, was too harsh? Or, do you think it justifiable?”
Iraq is a sovereign state. They have just dismantled an illegal “state”
within their borders that caused untold damage and suffering. They are perfectly justified in sentencing
these people to death for sedition, and threatening the sovereignty of the
state. The death penalty for sedition is
found on the books of many nations. We
have to consider that they are also sending a message that they do not tolerate
belligerents, particularly of foreign origin, coming over to wage war.
This is an issue because these people happen to be
French. People in the West, in Europe
and North America, and also in Australia and New Zealand, have no qualms about
harsh laws for foreign offenders, but they cry human rights when their own
nationals are caught abroad committing egregious crimes. This colonial mindset has to end. Being French is not special. It carries no special immunity in Iraq,
especially after what they did.
