The following is my answer to a Quora question: “Does
insurance usually cover all treatments for cancer, even after someone loses
their job?”
Within the context of Singapore, your policy is not
tied to your occupation, unless it is a group health policy. In such a case, leaving the job means losing
coverage, unless that coverage is portable. Assuming you have that hospitalisation coverage for
cancer, no policy covers all treatments. There is a schedule of treatments, and
anything not specifically in that schedule has to go through panel doctors for
approval. Otherwise, people in their
desperation would avail themselves to experimental treatment that does not have
regulatory approval yet. Should they die
due to the treatment, and not the cancer itself, the insurer does not want to
be liable for that.
