Linda Lee served as Sergeant-at-Arms.
David Seragih served as Toastmaster of the Day. Chng Pia Kim served as Timer. Jack Sia served as Ah Counter. Francis Goh served as Table Topics
Master. Eric Tan, DTM, served as
Creative Director. Joy Chow served as
Photographer.
The Opening Address
Jack Sia, in his opening address, spoke on
the feng shui aspects of the Year of the White Metal Rat. As detailed as Chinese horoscopes are, we
still create our own luck. A club that
spends its year executing rather than waiting for cosmic alignment tends to
outperform one that does not.
Assumptions versus Questions
Stephen Hoon’s speech, “How Old is Grandma
Lindsay,” opened with a game before landing its actual lesson: we constantly
make assumptions throughout our lives instead of asking the right
questions. Asking the right question to
establish fact, rather than accepting the first plausible guess, is a skill
requiring deliberate cultivation, not one that arrives naturally with age or
experience.
A Term in Public Relations, Told Honestly
Cindy Gan spoke on her journey as
Vice-President, Public Relations, sharing both her highlights and her low
points without editing the latter out for comfort. A committee report that only lists wins
teaches the next officer nothing useful about where the actual work happens.
The Evaluators and Results
Linda Lee, Ivan Lee, DTM, and Eric
Tan, DTM, served as Project Evaluators.
Best Speaker went to Cindy Gan.
Best Evaluator went to Eric Tan, DTM. Best Table Topics Speaker also went to Eric
Tan, DTM, a rare double that says more about consistency under pressure
than any single strong performance could.
