On the 14th August, I visited Toa Payoh
South Toastmasters Club, as a project evaluator.
This was my 28th club visit on the 45th day of the
Toastmaster year.
The Toastmaster of the Day was Mohamad Hijazi bin Sudarmaji. The language evaluator was Aaron Ting King
Hean. The table topics master was Gerald
Ong Wen Shun. The ah counter was
Vasanthi Jagannathan Ravi. And the timer was Myra
Teo.
The president, Li Shan Shan’s opening address covered
an overview of the club’s progress in the last few months, and they have done
well.
There was also an induction of new members by Aaron
Ting King Hean, Director, Division D. It
is wonderful to see this club growing again.
The first two speeches were icebreakers by Rennuka
Kalimuthu, and Noel Narindra. They are
married to each other. As such, their
speech revolved around their tremendous challenges leaving their hometowns in
Malaysia, and coming to Singapore to earn a living. They spoke about their time finding a job,
their fears of failure and going back, and their struggles to make it
work. This gives us, as Singaporeans,
some perspective about how we tend to take what we have for granted.
Emily Xin Qian gave her third speech. This was the second speech for the evaluation
and feedback of her path. She spoke
about using the voice to project emotions, and getting people, especially children,
to react positively. I had the privilege
of being present for her icebreaker, and her second speech, and I have noticed
how she has slowly found her voice, come out of her shell, and become a much
more confident person.
Anthony Leong gave his pathway speech for level
3. Despite having achieved his
Distinguished Toastmaster status a while back, it is inspirational that he is
still contributing to the club, and being an example, by undertaking the
Pathway programme.
The evaluators were Joshua Tay W. H., Zhou Si Ying, Paulus J. Gunadi, myself, and Mohamad Saddiqi bin Mohamad Said.
Best Speaker: Emily Xin Qian;
Best Evaluator: Mohamad Saddiqi bin Mohamad Said; and
Best Table Topics Speaker: Myra Teo.
