Leng Kee Advanced TMC as Project Evaluator, 21st August 2019

On the 21st August 2019, I was at Leng Kee Advanced Toastmasters Club, as project evaluator.  This was my 39th club visit on the 52nd day of the Toastmaster year.

The Toastmaster of the Day was Ban Haw Leong.  The timer was Rinoa Tsai.  The ah counter was Stella Lo M. Y.  The table topics master was Jeeva.  The club also celebrated the birthday of stalwart, and resident chef, Alex Ang.  There were 29 non-Toastmaster guests attending.

Jennifer Lim gave a speech with accompanying presentation slides, introducing herself, and talking about her family.  This was her icebreaker speech.  She was scandalously humorous, and vulnerably sincere, sharing her joys and her fears.  One of her son fell seven storeys; the other son was sent flying by a car.  Both lived, and have done well.  This was the best icebreaker speech I have seen in a long while.

Junie Seow also gave her icebreaker speech, telling us about growing up in the 1980s, taking the trishaw to school, and being the favoured youngest daughter.  She was not scheduled to speak, but after one of the scheduled speakers pulled out, she stepped up and delivered, and did well.

Jolina Flores gave an interesting speech about personal branding.  She encapsulated her speech with this quote: “If you are not branding yourself, you can be assured that others are doing it for you.”  And this drove the message home.

Julyka Hameed entertained us with a succinct, but comprehensive understanding of her communication style, and the need for a top down approach.  As a seasoned speaker, she began by giving us the parameters of her speech before expounding on pertinent points.

Rajan K. S., retired from the RSAF, relived history.  He was born before the independence of Singapore.  He recounted the early years of Lee Kuan Yew, and how he hated the policies implemented then, from austerity to the implementation of the CPF.  Now, in his later years, and with the benefit of hindsight, he has come to appreciate these policies, and understood why they were necessary.

The evaluators were Amos Mok, Quek Li Lin, Janssen Ho, myself, and Eric Tan Shi Wei.

Best Speaker: Jennifer Lim;
Best Evaluator: Eric Tan Shi Wei; and
Best Table Topics Speaker: Guest.
