On the 18th July 2019, I visited Kebun Baru
Toastmasters Club, as project evaluator.
This was my 13th club visit, on the 18th day of the
Toastmaster year.
We were privileged to have Jackie Lin Feng as our language
evaluator, and he brought insight, flair and entertainment in what might, otherwise,
be a dry discourse on grammar.
This was Alvin Ho’s first speech in a chapter meeting
as president, and his opening address was also his project speech. He is already a Distinguished Toastmaster, but
he is setting an example by continuing his project speeches.
Lisa Wong Pui Wan gave her maiden Pathway speech, and it was a
tour de force of her life journey, and what an exciting journey it was.
Li Shan Shan spoke about finding her funny bone, and
self-deprecatingly made fun of her height, and its relationship with her name,
which literally means “Mountain, Mountain”.
Zhou Si Ying spoke about public relations strategies,
and how it was akin to necessary propaganda. She has the potential to mature into a very
good speaker, even though she is relatively new to public speaking.
Oon Sim Sim gave an interpretative reading on “Peter
Pan”, the play. She brought the story to
life with her vocal variety, her use of pauses and interjections. She is an natural storyteller.
There was also a strong line-up of evaluators, put
together by the newly installed Vice-President,
Education, Vivian Wong Li An. They were Anand Ariyarathinam, Sophia Ngo Thi
Van, Naveen Giri, and Arnulfo Garpida.
The following were the ribbon winners:
Best Prepared Speech: Oon Sim Sim;
Best Evaluator: Myself; and
Best Table Topics: Anand Ariyarathinam.
