Jauhari Bilingual TMC as Project Speaker, 17th August 2019

On the 17th August 2019, I was at Jauhari Bilingual Toastmasters Club, at project speaker.  This was my 32nd club visit on the 48th day of the Toastmaster year.

The Toastmasters of the Day were Syaiful Hakimnudin bin Sa’adon, who spoke in Malay; and Siti Zuhriyyah binte Mohammed Ariffin, who spoke in English.  Siti Zuhriyyah binte Mohammed Ariffin is also the resident chef, and responsible for the amazing food.  The language evaluator was Aaron Ting King Hean.  The timer was Hasniza binte Khalil.

Wiwiek Najihah binte Hairudin spoke impassionately, in her president’s opening address, along the theme of “Kampungku, Kampungmu,” in both Malay and English, about the need for us to know our neighbours, to be good neighbours, and to leave a good neighbourhood for our children.

The first speech, by Syaiful Hakimnudin bin Sa’adon, was about his job, and the importance of radiographers.  He gave a humorous account of how doctors cannot even give a prognosis without them.  He was a last-minute replacement speaker, but he did exceptionally well.

In the spirit of national day, Muhammad Nurfarhan bin Abdul Jaaffar recounted the fraught relationship between Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and Major-General William Farquhar.  Farquhar was the man who actually built up the British settlement in Singapore.  Raffles actually spent less than a month in Singapore.  Farquhar was so beloved that the people of Singapore, of all groups, gave him a rousing send off when Raffles had him replaced.  And yet, despite all his work, we have Raffles Place, and Stamford Road.  General William Farquhar was the true founder of modern Singapore.

I gave a speech which was along the lines of what I spoke about in DSTA.  Whereas I gave security policy details there, and how they evolved; here, I only touched on them briefly, and went into the background of the Sri Lankan civil war, and how we took the lessons there that racial and religious harmony should never be taken for granted.

The evaluators were Willie Loh Chung Wei, Malcolm Sunny Chen @ Malik Sani Abdullah Chen, Mohamad Saddiqi bin Mohamad Said, and Tony Lim Tong Lee.

Best Evaluator: Tony Lim Tong Lee; and
Best Table Topics Speaker: Aaron Khalid bin Azhari, and Mohamad Saddiqi bin Mohamad Said.
