On the 26th July 2019, I
visited Tampines West Toastmasters Club, as project evaluator. This was the final programme in their series
of four speechcraft sessions. They
managed to gain eight new members, which is an amazing achievement. This was my 18th club visit, on
the 26th day of the Toastmasters year.
This visit was notable that we had
almost all the area directors and the division director of Division A present,
in a Division G club. It was a
coincidence since we were all contacted separately. Thomas Chen Jun Ying, Director, Area A3; and
myself were project evaluators. Celia
Jacqueline Lim, Director, Division A, was also a project evaluator. Raymond Zhang, Director, Area A4, was general
evaluator.
Gerald Yong Kim Heong, my mentor at
AIA Toastmasters Club, when I first started out, was the language evaluator.
I evaluated Siti Marsita binte Atan’s
speech, which a story of her first mentor, her father. It was a poignant story of hope, then loss due
to his untimely demise, and growth. This
is a story that we can all relate to, and it resonated with the audience. She deservedly won best speaker. I was voted best evaluator, but it could be
due to the fact that I had excellent material to work with.
Rina Tay Sim Seck presided over the table
topics. The theme was inspired by her
recent camper van visit of New Zealand, and all questions were based on the pictures
she took. She is a surprisingly good
nature photographer.
Gerald Yong Kim Heong’s language
evaluation began with the disclaimer that he is an accountant, not an English
teacher. However, he was excellent as
usual, with an accountant’s eye for detail and nuances in language.
Raymond Zhang was thorough and
detailed as general evaluator. He was so
thorough, I was waiting for my DNA test.
The speechcraft closed with the
President, Stella Lo M. Y.’s address, congratulating everybody for making it a
resounding success.
