The following is my
answer to a Quora question: “Should Singapore follow the Western
model of politics?”
Which Western model? Monarchy? Theocracy? Feudalism? We already follow the Westminster
Parliamentary system, which is a “Western” model. It is a system of government we inherited from
the British.
If by “Western”, you mean Liberal Democracy, that is
nothing more than semi-organised chaos and legalised corruption. Personally, I believe a one man, one vote
democracy is itself a very bad idea. It
implies the vote of the idiot is equivalent to the vote of the person who knows
the issues. Unfettered democracies throw
up transient governments invested in short-term policies because people in
large groups devolve to the lowest common denominator. It is Singapore’s authoritarian government
that has allowed us to achieve what we have achieved, not elections.
