The following is my
answer to a Quora question: “Why do young people in some
high-income developed countries say their country is a horrible place to
live? A few examples are the US,
Singapore, and Australia?”
Young people are full of idealism and emotions, and do
not appreciate the wisdom of pragmatism that comes with age. They look at the grass on the other side, and
fail to realise that sometimes, the insecticide is poisonous. The Singaporean youth, in particular, are
pampered. Most of them think they know something of the world because they have
been to a few places on holiday. They
have not been there for work, and stayed there for an extended period of time
to get a sense of how things truly are in other countries.
Most of them are slowly weaned of their ridiculous
idealism with age and maturity. And
those who do not, will leave, as is their right. That is best for them, and best for the
country. As a small nation, we have no
place for those who are not committed to the common good, and being part of
something greater than they are.
