The following is my answer to a Quora
question: “If
one spouse is a diplomat, with diplomatic immunity, and the other spouse does
not live with the diplomat spouse, does the other spouse still have diplomatic
immunity?”
The levels of diplomatic immunity are agreed upon between the host nation and the hosted nation. It is given to specific people, in the course of their duties. Diplomatic immunity is revoked when the diplomat are no longer in that position. Accordingly, it is not extended to people associated with the diplomat. That means the spouse, the children, not even their favourite dog walker. It is irrelevant, in this case, where the spouse stays.
