The following is my answer to a Quora
question: “Which
political party in Singapore can be considered ultranationalist?”
Singapore does not have an actual ultranationalist party. Ultranationalism is an extreme form of nationalism that promotes the interests of the state or people above all others. Such a concept will not work in Singapore, a city state built on free trade. Free trade also necessitates the free movement of personnel, and funds.
Singaporeans are pragmatic, not stupid. They are not going to countenance a party whose ideology would destroy our prosperity. Most of us are immigrants or the descendants of immigrants. There is no major voting bloc disaffected by issues of race or nationalism. The contentions are issues of economics, the class society, and wealth distribution. Singapore is in the early stages of a class struggle.
