The following is my answer to a Quora
question: “I
invented a medical device, and I want to know how do I get it covered by
insurance companies so consumers may be able to use it at little or no cost?”
Firstly, you need to get the device approved by the relevant organs of state. And if you want to gain monetarily from this, you need it patented.
Secondly, it needs to be in use in medical centres and hospitals. This means they have to be convinced that it is better than what they have, or a viable alternative method of treatment. There has to be a track record of use.
Finally, the panel doctors of the different insurance companies have to evaluate it, and accept it as a viable, schedule treatment before they put it on the hospitalisation plan schedule of approved treatments. All this will take time. Think in a time frame of years.
