The following is my answer to a Quora question: “What should be the ideal investment ratio in mutual funds, real estate, gold, and savings account if I am 35, and getting married soon?”
There is no such thing as an ideal investment ratio since every person has a different investment goal, different financial circumstance and a different investment horizon. Also, we have to consider that this varies depending on where you are, and how the market is. That is why it is important to have a local financial advisor who is credible and knowledgeable.
What your financial advisor would do is sit down with you, and conduct a comprehensive financial health review, the FHR. In that process, he will establish all the facts mentioned above, and your budget and goals. Your risk tolerance is also considered, since this determines the type of asset class to recommend.
Also, if you are getting married, you have to consider coverage for your wife, and if you are a cautious man, ways to protect your assets in the event of a divorce. This is where insurance policies and trusts are useful. You cannot bet on a happy ever after.
