The following is
my answer to a Quora question: “Should Singapore pay for
the third bridge to Malaysia?”
There is very little to gain for Singapore. A third bridge would cost over a billion just for the bridge, let alone the monies that we need to put up for the infrastructure of a border crossing. This will likely mean a third area of congestion on both sides.
Instead of wasting money and land on a third crossing, Malaysia should fix their CIQ, and get their customs and police officers to man all those booths. The reason we have congestion is not because of the inadequacy of the border crossings, but due to the inefficient management of the current CIQ. If that is not addressed, we will simply be perpetuating the problem instead of fixing it.
