The following is my answer to a Quora question: “What other countries have walls that work, like Donald Trump says?”

There used to be a wall between east and west Berlin.  There were guard posts, mine fields and machine gun nests.  Even that did not stop people from trying to cross into the west, even in the face of death.  There is a huge demilitarised zone between North and South Korea.  It has everything the Berlin Wall had, and then some.  Even then, people still crossed, or died trying.  China had a huge wall to keep the barbarian Xiongnu, and other tribes at bay.  China was still conquered by the Mongols.  I could go on, from the Maginot Line to Hadrian’s Wall to the Byzantine chains across the Bosporus.  Walls never work 100%; there is no such thing.
