The following is my answer to a Quora question: “Can
I buy medical insurance in the US, if I come to the US with a tourist visa?”
No, because you would fall under passer by rules, and
there will be compliance issues. You
need to stay in the country for a specific period of time before you can apply
for medical insurance. One of the
reasons is the concern that you have an undisclosed preexisting condition, and
it would be almost impossible for the insurer to pull your medical records if
it is in another country.
On another note, why would you want to buy American
medical insurance. Out of all the
developed nations in the world, it is among the most expensive and the hardest
to claim. The claim history is not
assuring at all, and the jump in premiums across tiers is huge. Unless you come from a country where the
finance industry is dysfunctional, and absolutely unreliable, you might be
better off getting coverage where you are.
