On the 12th September 2019, I was at AIA
Toastmasters Club, as Contest Toastmaster of the Day. This was AIA Toastmasters Club’s Humorous
Speech and Evaluation Contest.
The contest chair was Iris Zhuo Jia Yi. The creative director was Joy Chow Jie Lin. The photographer was Fion Yong Yam Foon. The sergeants-at-arms were Mandy Poon Sin Man, Gordon Kwok Jun Wei,
Yeo Jing Xian, April Lin Shu Li, and Frances Goh Ching Yee. The chief judge was Iman Yusoff. The test speaker was Kris Frank Martis.
Cindy Gan Chia Ee spoke about being a dictator, and
how she arrived at that conclusion, from looking at the Dynamic Leadership
Pathway. She laid out a twisted, but
convincing, argument for tyranny. She
has oodles of the sass required to pull it off, and I do not think another
person could make this as funny as she did.
Ivan Lee Kuan Seng spoke about the time he went to the
wrong wedding because he was late. He gave
an animated account of the ordeal he went through, in an attempt to retrieve
his hong bao. The moral of the
story: check that you are the correct wedding before giving money.
Gerald Yong Kim Heong told us about his journey to the
West, where he did not know whether he was the monkey, the pig, or the sand
demon, or even the horse. All that, so
he could finally get his ACCA. Along the
way, he took a walk in the garden, met someone, and he is still walking in that
garden with her – his wife.
Jack Sia Cheong Ghee spoke his lessons learnt from his
friend, who was married for 50 years.
Linda Lee gave a hilarious speech that involved her
body not being as limber as it once was.
She said somethings were no longer firm, but hanging here and there –
her biceps. Hers was an extravaganza of
misdirection humour.
Margrette Lo Foong Quan told us of the time she decided to trek
the Himalayas. She said she trained for
the last ten years, just not the last five.
She spoke of climbing a thousand steps, and just as she was about to
give up, a voice from the heavens said, “Mummy, can you hurry up?” She dressed the part, and she spoke the
part. She was funny, and
self-deprecating.
The contestants for the evaluation contest were Gerald
Yong Kim Heong, Linda Lee, Eric Tan Shi Wei, Ivan Lee Kuan Seng, and Jack Sia
Cheong Ghee.
