On the 04th September 2019, I was at Gek
Poh Ville Toastmasters Club, as language evaluator. This was my 48th club visit on the
66th day of the Toastmaster year.
The Toastmaster of the Day was Bridget Nicole Lee. The timer was Jason Seet C. M.. The table topics master was Chloe Mai.
The vice-president of education, Kang Siew Hwa, gave
the opening address, since the president, Bridget Lee, was the Toastmaster of
the Day, and to give her some exposure.
She spoke about the relationship between the mentor, and the protégé,
and how that is the foundation of every club.
Clarisa Sibulo spoke about growing up poor, in Manila,
the Philippines. When she was young, her
parents told her to study hard, not think about boys, and support the
family. Despite the heavy subject
matter, her story was humorous, uplifting, and enlightening. She regaled us with her misadventures in
school, crushes, dating as an adult, and the travails of her parents now nagging
her to get married.
Lim Zhi Wang gave us financial tips. His title was, “Financial Tips My Mother
Never Told Me”, which immediately caught our attention. His journey in finance began with him hating
mathematics in school, and how he eventually met the right teacher, who motivated
him.
Justin Neo Kim Hang spoke about leadership styles. As a former SAF officer, he came to discover
that his style was empathetic, which is what we do not expect from a person
with a military background. However, he
laid forth a convincing argument why it works, how it works, and the basis of
his style of leadership.
Lock Poh Choo told the story of owning our own durian
tree, and the process needed to grow it from a seed, until there is fruit. It was then revealed that this is an analogy
of her journey of public speaking, and Toastmasters. It was a clever way to tell a story.
Cindy Puah, the birthday girl, gave a PowerPoint presentation
with videos, a reflection of her path.
It is evident how she has grown as a person, as a leader, and into a
pillar, not just of her club, but in Toastmasters. She is an inspiration for those who want to
learn to lead and communicate effectively.
The evaluators were Bridget Lee, James Pang Jing Perng,
Danny Ng, Mohan Tamilmaran, and Morgan Zhou.
Best Speaker: Cindy Puah;
Best Evaluator: Morgan Zhou; and
Best Table Topics Speaker: Suze Shon Ng.
