The following is my
answer to a Quora question: “What percentage of Singapore’s water
is imported? What will complete
self-sufficiency in water mean for relations with Malaysia?”
Between 40% to 50% of Singapore’s water is drawn from
Johor. Singapore is aiming for water
self-sufficiency by 2060. The remaining
water agreement expires in 2061. When that happens, Malaysia will cease picking a fight
with Singapore over water, and will pick fights with us over a thousand other
issues, real and imagined. Nothing is
going to change until Malaysian politicians actually address domestic issues
instead of obfuscating it with cheap nationalist parlour tricks performed to a
gullible electorate.
