The following is my
answer to a Quora question: “Should Brazil allow the US military
passage through its lands, for them to invade Venezuela, in the event of a war?”
No. Brazil is
part of Mercosur, just like Venezuela, although Venezuela’s membership is
suspended. It would be against the
charter for Brazil to allow that. Also,
considering the political situation within Brazil, it would be political
suicide for any Brazilian administration to overtly do that.
Secondly, it would make more sense for the US to
invade from the sea, where all the major population centres of Venezuela, and
all the oil infrastructure is, instead of fighting their way across the
mountains and jungle, and potentially sustaining greater casualties.
Finally, a Venezuelan invasion is not feasible when
Venezuela is supported by Russia and China, two Security Council members. The US does not have a good reason to declare
was, other than the fact they do not like the leftwing dictator. That area of South America is all ruled by
leftwing governments. This will make any
military action messy.
