On the 10th December 2019, I was at EMinent
Communicators Toastmasters Club, as language evaluator. This was my 134th club visit on
the 163rd day of the Toastmaster year.
The sergeant-at-arms was Mithun Jugal Kishore Malani. The Toastmaster of the Day was Raymond Zhang. The timer was Angela Lansbury. The ah counter was Soe Myat Hein. The table topics master was Marshall Cooper.
In his president’s opening address, Mithun Jugal Kishore Malani
mentioned a friend he knew for more than 17 years. The day before, he was knocked down by a car,
in a hit and run. He passed away. It was the day before his wedding
anniversary. This reminds us of the
ephemeralness of life, and how we should treasure every moment with our loved
ones. It was a poignant reminder.
Adith Chandrasekhar, in his very first speech, spoke
about the concept of altruism. He cited
a series of experiments conducted by economists. Essentially, there is a finer line between altruism
and avariciousness than we all realised.
Soe Myat Hein gave an account of the Myanmar water
festival. Thingyan is the Burmese New
Year Festival that usually occurs in middle of April. It is a Buddhist festival
celebrated over a period of four to five days, culminating in the New Year. The
dates of the Thingyan Festival are calculated according to the Burmese
calendar. He gave his personal account
of it, and how he misses home.
Swaminathan R. S. gave a presentation on the
consequences of the 4th Industrial Revolution, and how automation
and artificial intelligence is changing the way we do business. He spoke about growth careers, and careers
that under threat.
The evaluators were Lim Chang Jing, Putu Sanjaya
Setiawan, and Penny Anne Radcliffe.
Best Evaluator: Penny Anne Radcliffe; and
Best Table Topics Speaker: Guest.
There was no voting for best speaker.
