On the 26th November 2019, I was at Bishan
Toastmasters Club, as language evaluator.
This was my 127th club visit on the 149th day of
the Toastmaster year.
The sergeant-at-arms was Kokul Raj. The Toastmaster of the Day was Kanchan Mendis. The timer was Chen Li Ming. The ah counter was Winnie Chong. The table topics master was Rakesh Kethineedi.
Sophia Ngo Thi Van began her president’s address with
a roast of Celine Goh. It was more
self-deprecating accolades coated with affection.
Tuyen spoke about the effects of stress. Rather, her assertion is that it is not
stress that affects us, but our reaction to stress. When she was in primary school, her family
moved from Vietnam to France. She was
initially reticent, but as her mastery of French grew, she became more confident. She became a lawyer. She then moved to Singapore, and is working
on her mastery of English.
P. S. Chaudhary spoke about following his passion:
electronics. He then shared some of the
challenges working in technical in a trading house. His advise that we should follow our
passions, but keep some time to ourselves.
Nino Yap said that the truth is limited by our
perception. He repeated the well-known
parable of the blind men and the elephant to illustrate his point. This is the dichotomy between absolute and
relative truth. His consideration is the
philosophical understanding of the concept of truth.
Sajeev Kumar Menon read an extract from Edgar Allen
Poe’s “Loss of Breath”.
The evaluators were Ernie Khoo, A. Suresh, Linda Zhang,
and Zhou Si Ying.
Best Speaker: Tuyen;
Best Evaluator: A. Suresh; and
Best Table Topics Speaker: Guest.
