Buona Vista TMC as Language Evaluator, 05th December 2019

On the 05th December 2019, I was at Buona Vista Toastmasters Club, as language evaluator.  This was my 131st club visit on the 158th day of the Toastmaster year.

The Toastmaster of the Day was Julyka Hameed.  The timer was Serena Lee.  The ah counter was Lee Pei Geok.  The table topics master was Chong Ruey Hua.

In her president’s address, Pee Hai Ning told us how she loves Christmas.  She shared some of her earliest Christmas childhood memories: artificial snow at Tanglin Mall.  Her address centered around the theme of family.

Melvin Tan gave us a presentation on dragonboat racing.  He informed us that dragonboat racing has a 2,500-year history.  It began as a festival to commemorate the poet Qu Yuan, who lived during the Warring States period.  He also took the time to explain the mechanics of the race, and how the team is set up.

Tushar Sinha spoke about the need for scepticism.  He began his speech with an explanation of precession in the Earth’s orbit, and how that means there is a change in the north star every several thousand years.  In the time when the Great Pyramids were built, 4,800 years ago, the north star was Thuban.  In 4,000 CE, the north star will be Gamma Cephei.

The evaluators were Wilson Ong, and May Zhang.

Best Table Topics Speaker: Pee Hai Ning.
There was no voting for best speaker, or best evaluator.
