On the 19th November, Jauhari Bilingual
Toastmasters Club held a demonstration meeting at Andalus private school. I was the language evaluator. This was my 119th Toastmasters
event, on the 141st day of the Toastmaster Year. This Toastmasters meeting was largely conducted
in Malay. As such, much of the flavour,
the rhetorical devices, and the beauty of the speeches cannot be fully conveyed
when translated into English.
The Toastmaster of the Day was Muhammad Nurhakim bin
Mohamed Yusop. The table topics master
was Mohamad Saddiqi bin Mohamad Said. The timer was Syaiful
Hakimnudin bin Sa’adon.
The charter president-elect, Abdullah Uthman, welcomed
all attendees. He expressed his hope
that the club would grow, and do well.
He also said that he was surprised to be nominated as the charter
president. Whilst others were there to
be chairmen, he wanted to be a fisherman.
The first speaker, and also giving his maiden speech,
was Fathur Rahman bin Daud. He gave a
humorous account of his secret to looking younger than his more than four
decades – his affection with his wife.
He is the youngest of five children, and there were his comedic travails
of being the youngest.
Muhammad Nurfarhan bin Abdul Jaaffar spoke about the
concept of mentorship within Toastmasters.
He said that knowledge loses its value when it is not passed on, and
enhanced.
Wiwiek Najihah binte Hairudin spoke about the ordeal
of dealing with procrastinators. It was
a self-deprecating speech, and she was the ultimate procrastinator. In her case, it was about taking our loved
ones for granted. It was a poignant
account of the time she did not spend with her grandfather, and her regret when
he passed on. This is a stark account of
what we take for granted.
The evaluators were Siti Zuhriyyah binte Mohammed
Ariffin, Nurliza binte Sawi, and Othman bin Muhammad Sadli.
Best Speaker: Fathur Rahim bin Daud;
Best Evaluator: Othman bin Muhammad Sadli; and
Best Table Topics Speaker: Guest.
