The following is my answer to a Quora
question: “Which
is the best way to learn about stocks?”
We are fortunate to live in an age where
much knowledge is available to us, from books to videos to social media,
affording us the possibility of interaction with sources of knowledge direct.
Firstly, it is good to avail ourselves to
books, videos and even workshops to give us that foundational knowledge of
investing, finance, and the market. Without
this foundational knowledge, everything else would seem inaccessible. The greatest danger is when we imagine we
understand when we do not.
Secondly, it is important to find the
company of people who do invest, and try and understand their motivations and
methodology. Everybody has something
they swear by. It is important to
qualify who we take knowledge from. Good
people are known by their qualities. There
are social media platforms and investment clubs and groups that allow us to
connect.
Finally, before actually committing, it is
important to do our homework, and make sure we understand the fund or counter
we intend to invest in. And if this is
too overwhelming, spend that time to get a good financial advisor.
