The following is
my answer to a Quora question: “Is it economical for
Singapore to import sand from the Sahara for land reclamation projects?”
No, unless the need for sand justifies the
cost, and there really is no other source. Singapore has been the largest importer of
sand for many years, for land reclamation.
Instead of looking for new sources of sand, Singapore is looking at
alternative methods of reclamation that have less environmental impact. One of them is the polder development, as
found in the Netherlands. This is also
less costly, and has less environmental impact, but there is a vulnerability in
that the land is below sea level.
