The following is
my answer to a Quora question: “Is it possible to
negotiate an insurance claim with an insurer?”
Yes, it is, within reason. Despite what the policy contract may say, and
the schedule of coverage and benefit illustration, there are a lot of things
that may not be explicitly covered, because that would be impossible. Within the Singapore context, the
hospitalisation plans have a comprehensive schedule, and they eliminate
ambiguity by going through panel doctors. The recommendation of panel doctors are always
covered, unless stated otherwise.
When it comes to accident plans, the
claims have to be justified if they are not explicitly within the general
guidelines. Accidental death claims,
however, depend on the coroner’s report, and challenging that involves a court
case. They either pay out the claim in
full, or do not. General insurance is
more challenging, and it involves correspondence with the assessor. It is not the intent of the insurer to deny a
claim. This process is to verify it and
to assess the payout. As long as you
have the relevant supporting documents, your claim will likely be approved.
