On the 02nd October
2019, I was at Bukit Batok Toastmasters Club, as Toastmaster of the Day. This was my 105th club visit on
the 125th day of the Toastmaster year.
The
sergeant-at-arms was Julia Pan, the table topics master was Annie Goh, the
timer was Sathiyavani d/o Muthu, and the workshop speakers were John Liew, and Aaron
Ting King Hean.
In
the first workshop, John Liew brought us on a magical journey using only
words. Utilising excerpts of the “Rime
of the Ancient Mariner”, he demonstrated the power of words to paint a picture.
Lucy
Koh gave her icebreaker speech, where she said that she will not be defined by
her titles, and her relationships. It
was an existentialist monologue.
Mellita
Angga read from a letter she wrote to her younger self, in a period of great
challenge in her life. It was words of
comfort, and detailed the loneliness, the insecurity, and the fears she had
when she first came to Singapore, all those years ago. A foreigner in a foreign land, she spoke of
the journey of adapting, and rebuilding her social network. It was an uplifting story, and there were a
great many lessons to be had by all.
Vanitha
spoke about the process of communication.
She defined communication as a dynamic process that makes or breaks
relationships. Communication is not just
about the words, but how they are utilised.
Aaron
Ting King Hean gave an excellent exposition of the process of evaluation, and
what it actually is. He went through the
process of evaluating a speech, and the areas to focus on at each stage of the
speech.
The
evaluators were Tony Lim Tong Lee, Vincent Chua Tin An, Tony Tan Sein Wee, Lim Chang
Jing, and Martinn Ho Yuen Liung.
Best Speaker: Mellita Angga;
Best Evaluator: Vincent Chua Tin An; and
Best Table Topics Speaker: Tan Sze Yong.
