The following
is my answer to a Quora question: “How is a rhetorician different from a public speaker?”
A rhetorician is an expert in the
art of rhetoric. All rhetoricians are good
public speakers because rhetoric is the foundation of public speaking. Most public speakers simply speak in public. They may be comfortable with it, they may
lack any sense of fear or apprehension, but it does not mean they are good
speakers. In fact, most public speakers
do not even have the foundations of the art of rhetoric, let alone mastering
it.
