On the 13th October
2019, I was at Chong Pang Toastmasters Club, as table topics master. This was my 87th club visit on the
105th day of the Toastmaster year.
The
sergeant-at-arms was Yuvraj Aher. The
Toastmaster of the Day was Wendy. The
timer was Jack. The ah counter was Anthony. The language evaluator was John Tan.
Kok Yee Keong conducted a workshop on table
topics. He went through, from memory, seven
methods he used to address speaking off the cuff on any topic. It was enlightening.
Tony
Tan Sein Wee spoke about the different aspects of mentoring. He said that our first mentors are our
parents, and we take our values from them.
He segued onto the challenges of finding a job in Singapore, after his
graduation, which was especially difficult considering he was not a Singaporean
then. His mentor through this was his
school career counsellor, who guided him.
Chang
Soek Khim shared with us, on some very nice slides, the art of negotiation. She said that there are six steps: Preparation,
planning and research; the opening – rapport, agenda, purpose, and timing;
active listening, probing, and persuasion; proposal – anchoring, and framework;
concession trading; and finally, the agreement.
This is very useful for those who want to be better negotiators.
The
evaluators were John Sih, and Michael Yonathan.
Best
Table Topics Speakers: Kok Yee Keong, & Guest.
There
was no voting for best speaker, and best evaluator.
