The following is my answer to a Quora question: “Is leadership a gift or a developed skill?”
There are people who have attributes which help in leadership, such as charisma, and eloquence. Sometimes, it is the other aspects of the lottery of birth such as wealth, good looks and family legacy. In the main, however, there is no worth fretting about the cards we do not have. They merely determine the starting point.
Leadership, as a whole, is a skill
that we develop. If means maximising the
gifts we have, and acquiring skills and experience, finding a reason to lead,
and a vision to bring people together for that common cause. Nobody is born a great leader. We become good leaders by leading, failing,
recovering from failure, learning, and then leading again.
