The following is my answer to a Quora question: “Is Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investing going to help save the planet?”
ESG is not about saving the planet.
The planet will continue existing long after we go extinct. It is an attempt to put in place values that
help us manage resources sustainably so that we can maintain our civilisation. ESG investing alone will not solve the issues
of habitat destruction, climate change, and lack of sustainability. It slows down that rate of deterioration. It is not enough; but it is a start. All that said, ESG investing has become, in
many cases, less about substance, and more about branding.
