The following is my answer to a Quora question: “Why is dissent important for democracy?”
A system where everybody agrees on everything, and the government
is able to pass legislation without challenge, results in groupthink. The system becomes ossified, and society
stagnates. Every system, every leader,
every institution, needs to be challenged.
It is impossible for any single person, or group of people, to right all
the time, every time. When the
groupthink is not challenged, it results in blind spot. Such a society will eventually fall into
obsolescence and fail.
