Quora Answer: Is Lobbying Legal in Singapore?

The following is my answer to a Quora question: “Is lobbying legal in Singapore?

If by lobbying, you mean a professional entity, or persons, who meets with members of the government to sway legislation by inducements, trips, and endorsements, then no.  What Americans call lobbying; we call corruption.

Everyone has access to the government.  The Prime Minister’s Office has an email, and all emails, except troll messages, are responded to within three working days.  There are regular meet the people sessions, where Members of Parliament, even the Prime Minister, meet the people they represent, to listen to their local concerns and address them.  And groups organise themselves to petition for causes, or share their positions.  None of that is lobbying; that is the process of democratic accountability.
