Toa Payoh South TMC as Project Speaker, 11th September 2019

On the 11th September 2019, I was at Toa Payoh South Toastmasters Club, as project speaker.  This was my 56th club visit on the 75th day of the Toastmaster year.

The Toastmaster of the Day was Flaming Chew.  The timer was Alvin Ho.

Li Shan Shan, in her opening address, spoke about the events of 9-11 and how it unfolded for her, when she was still in ITE then.  The news was shown while they were in a lecture.  She then conducted a Pathway workshop for Base Camp managers.

Anthony Leong read out an excerpt from his fathers, “Of Stone Beasts & Aged Widows”.  It was a complex extract, with great depth, and nuance.  There was a comparison between Peking, and Paris, about a trip to the Forbidden City in those halcyon pre-war years, and a description of the plants at the resting place of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, which reminded the author of the maqam of Shaykh Abu al-Fath Ghiyats ad-Din ‘Umar ibn Ibrahim al-Khayyami an-Nishaburi (q.s.).

My project speech was about the current kerfuffle in Hong Kong, and as a finance professional, the challenges involved in moving funds out of the country.

Jasmine Faith Vahdati reflected on her path, where she enumerated dating disasters, and meandered about her Toastmaster journey.

Ler Ser Yeang spoke about childhood hunger as a consequence of war, and conflict. She elaborated on food wastage, and cited sources, giving numbers, and details, so that we are made aware of the scale of this outrage.  A billion metric tonnes of food is wasted annually.

The evaluators were Emily Xin Qian, Brian Chye Bei ‘An, Gerald Ong Wen Shun, and Ivan Lee Kuan Seng.

Best Speaker: Myself; and
Best Evaluator: Ivan Lee Kuan Seng.
