The following is my answer to a Quora question: “If I create a trust, solely for my granddaughter when she becomes an adult, are the parents able to dip into it before that?”

No, unless you, as the settlor, make her parents beneficiaries as well.  Even as trustees, they are not legally allowed to dip into the trust fund.  As such, it is important to have reliable and credible trustees to manage the fund until your granddaughter is of age to receive her inheritance.
