The following is my answer to a Quora
question: “If
a bank deposited money into your account, by accident, and you withdrew it,
would you have to pay it back?”
Yes, because that is not your money. The law differentiates between possession and ownership. Your inadvertent possession of this money does not make you the owner of it, and the bank has the right to take it back. Failure to pay back is a criminal offence.
