EASB TMC as Project Evaluator, 11th October 2019

On the 11th October 2019, I was at EASB Toastmasters Club, as project evaluator.  This was my 85th club visit on the 103rd day of the Toastmaster year.

The sergeant-at-arms was Lou You Ee.  The Toastmaster of the Day was Raymond Zhang.  The timer was Duong Sopheak.  The ah counter was Ney Sophear.  The language evaluator was Celia Jacqueline Lim.

Pheng Kim Heng, in his address, as president, spoke of the need to recover from failure.  He cited Denzel Hayes Washington Jr.: “Do not be afraid to fail big.”  He told of the journey of Joanne K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, and how she started out as a single mother, on welfare.  He gave the example of Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, at the darkest hours of World War II, and how leadership saved the nation.

Ng Kian Ho gave a speech introducing himself.  He spoke of his journey from extrovert, to introvert, to ambivert.  He went a long way, through several career changes, from working as a researcher at A*Star and P&G, to an air force technician, to finally being a financial advisor, and all that, to find his voice.

Zhou Ming Qin spoke about the different types of artificial intelligence, and its implication on society.  She discussed the oft-held fear that artificial intelligence may take over the world, and herald the destruction of humanity.  Her discussion had depth, and she quoted, from memory, people as diverse as Elon Reeve Musk, and Dr. Stephen William Hawking, on their positions for, and against the hypothetical scenario.

Sov Kimchav spoke about the concept of lifelong learning.  Learning is not confined to formal education institutions.  He went, at depth, at the various avenues of learning, and clarified, at length, their limitations.

The evaluators were Duong Sopheak, Li Shan Shan, and myself.

Best Speaker: Ng Kian Ho; and
Best Evaluator: Myself.
There was no table topics session.
