In Spanish, the “s” sound cannot stand alone at the beginning of a
word. It is always an “s” blend such as
“espalda” or “esta”. This
is why Spanish speakers add an “e” to the beginning of words beginning with the
letter “s” in English. For example, they
would say “esquid” instead of “squid”.
